What not to say to clients when the markets drop

Clients interpret that as an adviser not caring about them. It's just selling clients platitudes. What advisers can say, to a retired client, is that their monthly draw comes out of short-term government bonds, which rise in value during a crisis. In other words, we can coast for a year with uncertain stock prices.
