Representativeness Heuristic

8. Representativeness Heuristic

Representativeness Heuristic makes us think that if two things resemble each other, they have some correlative link.

In Short: Representativeness Heuristic is what makes us judge books by their covers. If two things look alike on the outside, it leads us to believe they must also be the same on the inside.

For Example: Imagine seeing a musclebound, tattoo-laden man at the gym. If someone asked, “Do you think it’s more likely that he’s A) a professional wrestler; or B) a schoolteacher?” Representativeness Heuristic would cause you to choose A). In reality, it’s much more likely to be B), because there are many more schoolteachers in the world than professional wrestlers.
